Earnings Loss Benefit for survivors or children

When does the benefit end?

For survivors

You will receive the benefit until the date when the Veteran would have reached 65 years old. After this date, you may qualify to receive the Retirement Income Security Benefit or the Canadian Forces Income Support and the Supplementary Retirement Benefit.

For children

You will receive the benefit until you are 18 years old.

For permanently dependent children

If the child is considered permanently dependent—due to a physical or mental incapacity—they will receive the benefit until the date when the Veteran would have reached 65 years old. After this date, they may qualify to receive the Canadian Forces Income Support.

The Earnings Loss Benefit is a taxable, monthly benefit provided to the dependents of a deceased Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) member.

Do I qualify?

You may qualify if you are the survivor or dependent child of a CAF member or Veteran who died due to an illness or injury related to their service.

How is it calculated?

The amount—before the consideration of other income—is based on the Earnings Loss Benefit that would have been paid to the Veteran. It is provided in the following manner:

  • 60% to the survivor, and
  • 40% to the dependent children.

Note: Amounts for dependent children are paid, on their behalf, to the survivor or the guardian.

The Earnings Loss Benefit can be paid directly to you until you are 25 years old, when you are enrolled in an approved course of instruction (defined as a full-time educational program at an accredited high school, college, university or trade school). While in an approved course of instruction, you may also qualify for assistance through VAC’s Educational Assistance Program.
