Sherry Romanado, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence met with Canadian Armed Forces members and their families at the Saint-Jean Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu to provide details on changes to VAC programs and benefits that will do more to support Canada’s Veterans and their families.

Today, the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, joined the Government of Canada delegation, led by the Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, for a closing ceremony to mark the 75th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. The Canadian delegation attended commemorative events at the Pourville memorial, near the location code named “Green Beach”, and at the Dieppe Canadian War Cemetery. A total of 944 members of the Allied armed forces are interred in this cemetery, of which 707 are Canadian.

The Canadian delegation attended several events in the Dieppe, France, region to mark the 75th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid. Events were held in the Dieppe Canadian War Cemetery, at the Puys Memorial and the Signature ceremony at the Square du Canada in Dieppe.

The delegation gathered before dawn to participate in an Indigenous sunrise ceremony on the beach in Dieppe. After the ceremony, Buffalo Red Thunder drummers and dancers performed. Later in the day, the delegation toured a museum dedicated to the Dieppe Raid and had a chance to meet the Canadian Armed Forces contingent.

Canadian youth delegates visit the Biomarine site, a series of tunnels built during the Second World War that provided shelter for the local population, but also contained operating rooms, a nursery and offices for local government. The Canadian delegation, including four Dieppe Raid Veterans, tour battlefields around Dieppe with Directorate of History and Heritage historians.

On July 1, 2017 at Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial in France, the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Ambassador of Canada to France, joined Canadian and French citizens and officials to pay tribute to the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and recognize the service and ultimate sacrifice of Newfoundlanders in the First World War.

The Ambassador was joined by the Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, representing the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador; madame Odile Bureau, sous-préfète de Péronne and representative of the French Republic; Canadian Armed Forces members and military representatives from other countries; Veterans; and Canadian youth.

On June 15th, the Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, announced Government of Canada funding in support of the Invictus Games Toronto 2017. The Government of Canada will contribute up to $17.5 million to support the Invictus Games Toronto 2017 Organizing Committee in bringing this major international adaptive sporting event to Canada.

The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, participated in the RCL’s 50th Provincial Command Convention that began with a wreath laying ceremony and parade on Sunday May 14th at the Boer War Monument at Victoria Park in London, Ontario. During the afternoon the Minister addressed the delegates as part of the opening ceremonies by highlighting the Government of Canada’s support for Veterans and their families through recent announcements from Budget 2017. The Minister recognized the RCL and its members for their remarkable work and wished them a productive convention.
