Nov 12, 2017
The Government of Canada delegation wrapped up its journey in Belgium today, starting the day at the In Flanders Fields Museum in Ieper. Here they participated in a commemorative ceremony in honour of Alexander Decoteau, Canada’s first Indigenous-Canadian police officer and a talented long-distance runner, who was killed by an enemy sniper during the Battle of Passchendaele. Members of the delegation then participated in the 10-mile Poppies’ Run in Zonnebeke, a five-kilometre stretch of which was dedicated to Decoteau.

Nov 09, 2017
The Government of Canada delegation had a quintessentially Canadian military day. They started their morning with a commemorative ceremony at the St. Julien Canadian Memorial. A new plaque was unveiled there to highlight the national historical significance of the Second Battle of Ypres. The Second Battle of Ypres has been designated by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada as an event of national historic significance. During the ceremony, a bronze plaque in four languages, was unveiled by Parks Canada to commemorate this designation. After that, the delegation helped to open the Canadian Passchendaele Memorial Garden at the Passchendaele Memorial Museum 1917. The day ended with a remarkable display of military precision with the Canadian Armed Forces performing a Sunset Ceremony at the Passchendaele Canadian Memorial. The traditional exercise signals the troops to return to the garrison for the night.

Nov 08, 2017
The Government of Canada delegation started its first full day in Belgium with a First World War battlefield tour. The delegation—made up of Veterans, youth, and representatives of regimental and Indigenous organizations—moved into Ieper for the nightly Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate.
The ceremony, which honours the fallen from the First World War, has been held every night since 1928, except for a four year period during the Second World War.
